I have come to love the many stories of Elisha and the powerful things that happened wherever he went.
As I thought about my current situation today I realized I wanted to share this with you also. As Abby told us in the last devotion about the law of attraction and about how “what we think about comes about” this story tells us of a woman who had nothing left but her fear yet she trusted God in the midst of negative circumstances and HE SAVED HER SONS LIVES. God took THE RESOURCES SHE HAD and multiplied them to be ALL SHE NEEDED!
2 Kings 4:1-7 tells us this story.
“The wife of a man from the company of the prophets cried out to Elisha, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that he revered the Lord. But now his creditor is coming to take my two boys as his slaves.” Elisha replied to her, “How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?” “Your servant has nothing there at all,” she said, “except a small jar of olive oil.” Elisha said, “Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don’t ask for just a few. Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to one side.” She left him and shut the door behind her and her sons. They brought the jars to her and she kept pouring. When all the jars were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another one.” But he replied, “There is not a jar left.” Then the oil stopped flowing. She went and told the man of God, and he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left.””
What an absolutely beautiful story of Gods provision!! Wow! I seriously almost have to read the passage twice each time I go to this story. Oh how I love it. He gave the lady WHAT SHE NEEDED by multiplying WHAT SHE HAD!! Many times we only need the resources we have in front of us, however, we just need to get God’s presence over it. LITTLE IS MUCH IF GOD IS IN IT.
Notice this. Elisha told the woman to not just ask for a few jars. He told her to ask for MANY! How many times do we cut ourselves short by our negative and small thoughts. We see here in this story how Elisha encouraged her not to think small! How encouraging! Our finite minds cannot fathom what all God can do for us if we entrust him with our lives and our resources. I’m reminded of this in scripture.
“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.”
Ephesians 3:20-21 NIV
I know in my life recently God spoke to my heart and told me this very thing. He used someone in my church to come to me and give me a word from God. She came to me and said “The Lord says to use what’s right in front of you. You have all you need.” This shocked me because all I kept doing was thinking of the little I had and wondering what the heck that meant. That was months ago. Also a couple months ago as I was worshiping at the Kari Jobe concert and basking in God’s awesome presence there, God spoke to my heart and said “This is how I want you operating.” “Get my presence all over your life.” As I have sought God in my journey He has reminded me of these two phrases over and over.
1. Use what’s right in front of you
2.Get my presence over your life.
Then this week He led me to this passage of scripture about the widow’s oil and His words all came together so beautifully. This story is so beautiful to me and is resonating with me in my current situation. What about you? What is it in your life that maybe you are gripping too tight in your own strength?
God’s word says ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty.”
Zechariah 4:6 NIV
We are not meant to run ahead and do everything in our own strength. We are meant to seek the Lord above all else, get His presence over our life, let Him work, think positively, and have faith. Then guess what? We watch and see what He will do!
“Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.””
Exodus 14:13-14 NIV
So come on gals! Let’s do this together! Let’s apply these principles to our lives and watch and see what our God almighty will do!
